For clothing donations, do I need to have every single receipt for every clothing?
What's the procedure for proving the value of clothing? So that means that I don't need a receipt (when I actually purchased it) for every dress shirt that I'm donating?

- Make a list, take pictures and visit goodwill to get the average used price for whatever you are donating. That's assuming you are only donating to get a deduction on your taxes.
- It's an estimate. You can see some estimates from the salvation Army at this website: But, what you use is the value that the Charity is likely to get for the clothes.
- If I recall correctly, one can claim up to $250 in charitable deductions without recipts of any kind.
- I assume you are in the US and are expecting to declare the charitable contributions on your tax return. If so, read on. Also, this will help you only if you itemize your deductions. Also, the donations must be to an IRS approved not for profit organization. Make an itemized list of the items you donated. Include quantity, description, condition. For example: 3 flannel shirts worn 1 pr blue Levis new etc. The other thing you need is a receipt from the charity. That's really easy. That is all you will need. Your tax preparation person has guidelines from the IRS giving the values that may be deducted. You do not need receipts for your purchases of the items.
